Upper Scioto Valley School District News Article

From the Desk of the Superintendent

USV Community,

Welcome back to the 2019/2020 school year!  I am very excited about the new year and looking forward to working with the students, staff, board and community at Upper Scioto Valley Schools.  There are three core values that I strongly believe about education and they are vital to our school. These are:

  1. It is a Great Day to LEARN.  Everyday is!

  2. Care about ALL kids!

  3. Believe that all kids can learn and learn at a high level.

If we, as a district and community, believe and challenge ourselves to follow these three every day we will continue to grow and improve.

The District Leadership Team(DLT) has two goals for the 2019/2020 school year.  The first is an academic goal based on state testing results. This will be worked on through the continued implementation of the Formative Instructional Practices (FIP) and the usage of DLT and Teacher Based Teams (TBT’s).

The second goal of the district is based on climate of the school and will be measured using behavioral incidents and attendance.  Attendance will be the major area of focus for the district this year. Upper Scioto Valley has a chronic absenteeism number that is much higher than all surrounding districts.  If a student is not present, we cannot educate them. Our number one focus must be getting the students to attend school every day.

Chronic absenteeism is defined as missing 10% of the school days.  This breaks down to 18 days a year or 3 days a month. A student that is chronically absent any year between 8th and 12th grade is seven times more likely to dropout of school.  41% of students, who were chronically absent in Kindergarten or 1st grade, were below level reading in grade 3.

Please help us improve the attendance of all students at Upper Scioto Valley.

 Educationally,

Craig M. Hurley

Superintendent
